Caribbean Fellow in Gender & Macroeconomics, Regional (2004)
UNIFEM sponsored the 2004 Caribbean fellow at the annual course on engendering macroeconomics and international economics, organised by the International Working Group on Gender, Macroeconomics & International Economics. The fellowship included a commitment to work towards replication of the course in the region, to which end UNIFEM and the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Research (SALISES) co-convened a Roundtable in Barbados at which the fellow delivered a well-received presentation to a select audience of representatives of academia, women’s organisations, government ministries, the business community and the media to begin dialogue on gender & macroeconomics.

2. Ending Violence Against Women

TV Discussion Programme on Domestic Violence, Helen Television System (HTS), St. Lucia (2004)
Aired as part of HTS’ “Growth of a Nation” series of TV programmes exploring critical developmental issues, the programme was intended to increase public awareness of the iniquity of domestic violence. Feedback indicates that it has created an opening for further discussion on a subject that has long been taboo in St. Lucia.

Participation in Seminar on Disability & Human Rights, Disabled Women’s Network (DAWN), Trinidad & Tobago (2004)
DAWN is a strong advocate for disabled women and girls in the areas of reproductive rights, empowerment and education, economic independence, and youth empowerment. Participation in this British Council Seminar is expected to strengthen the Network’s capacity for advocacy for the rights of disabled women and girls to be reflected in legislation and policy.

Sexual Harassment Advocacy & Research Project, Coalition Against all forms of Sexual Harassment (CASH), Barbados (2004-2005).
CASH is seeking to ensure that the Government’s Draft Bill on sexual harassment defines sexual harassment comprehensively, imposes clear and rigorous obligations on employers and other relevant institutions to prevent sexual harassment, and provides appropriate legal protection and remedies.

3. Halting and Reversing the Spread of HIV/AIDS Among Women and Girls

• STI/HIV Prevention among Male & Female Commercial Sex Workers (CSWs), Ministry of Health , Barbados (2004)
UNIFEM facilitated participation of the Ministry’s project Administrator in the International HIV/AIDS Alliance Regional Workshop on Commercial and Transactional Sex. The workshop was designed to assist Caribbean countries with their response to HIV transmission associated with commercial and transactional sex, and was aimed at promoting information sharing and networking between regional governmental and non-governmental organizations involved in needs assessment and the planning of intervention strategies for CSWs.

4. Achieving Gender Equality in Democratic Governance

• CAFRA/CARIWA Leadership Building Workshops, Regional (2004)
CAFRA partnered with CARIWA to build the capacity of both their member organizations at two leadership-building workshops on the issues of “International Trade” and “Strengthening Women’s Leadership”. It’s expected that the training would enable the CAFRA and CARIWA membership to articulate positions on gender equality, as well as enhance their administration and negotiation skills.

Participation in 9th Regional Conference on Women & NGO Forum, Regional (2004)
UNIFEM supported the participation of five Caribbean delegates: one each from CAFRA and DAWN Caribbean; and one each from the National Women’s Machineries of Dominica, Haiti and St. Vincent. The participants were able to assist governmental delegations to ensure that the Outcome Document of the Conference reflected the concerns of Caribbean women. As a result, issues such as HIV/AIDS were addressed as were concerns for the connection between women’s familial responsibilities and poverty.
