• Caribbean Fellow
in Gender & Macroeconomics,
Regional (2004)
UNIFEM sponsored the 2004 Caribbean fellow at the annual
course on engendering macroeconomics and international economics,
organised by the International Working Group on Gender, Macroeconomics & International
Economics. The fellowship included a commitment to work towards
replication of the course in the region, to which end UNIFEM
and the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic
Research (SALISES) co-convened a Roundtable in Barbados at
which the fellow delivered a well-received presentation to
a select audience of representatives of academia, women’s
organisations, government ministries, the business community
and the media to begin dialogue on gender & macroeconomics.
• TV Discussion Programme
on Domestic Violence, Helen Television System (HTS), St. Lucia
(2004)
Aired as part of HTS’ “Growth of a Nation” series
of TV programmes exploring critical developmental issues,
the programme was intended to increase public awareness of
the iniquity of domestic violence. Feedback indicates that
it has created an opening for further discussion on a subject
that has long been taboo in St. Lucia.
• Participation
in Seminar on Disability & Human
Rights, Disabled Women’s Network (DAWN), Trinidad & Tobago
(2004)
DAWN is a strong advocate for disabled women and girls in
the areas of reproductive rights, empowerment and education,
economic independence, and youth empowerment. Participation
in this British Council Seminar is expected to strengthen
the Network’s capacity for advocacy for the rights
of disabled women and girls to be reflected in legislation
and policy.
• Sexual
Harassment Advocacy & Research
Project, Coalition Against all forms of Sexual Harassment
(CASH),
Barbados (2004-2005).
CASH is seeking to ensure that the Government’s Draft
Bill on sexual harassment defines sexual harassment comprehensively,
imposes clear and rigorous obligations on employers and
other relevant institutions to prevent sexual harassment,
and provides
appropriate legal protection and remedies.
• STI/HIV Prevention among Male & Female
Commercial Sex Workers (CSWs), Ministry of Health , Barbados
(2004)
UNIFEM facilitated participation of the Ministry’s
project Administrator in the International HIV/AIDS Alliance
Regional Workshop on Commercial and Transactional Sex. The
workshop was designed to assist Caribbean countries with
their response to HIV transmission associated with commercial
and transactional sex, and was aimed at promoting information
sharing and networking between regional governmental and
non-governmental organizations involved in needs assessment
and the planning of intervention strategies for CSWs.
• CAFRA/CARIWA
Leadership Building Workshops, Regional
(2004)
CAFRA partnered with CARIWA to build the capacity of both
their member organizations at two leadership-building workshops
on the issues of “International Trade” and “Strengthening
Women’s Leadership”. It’s expected that
the training would enable the CAFRA and CARIWA membership
to articulate positions on gender equality, as well as enhance
their administration and negotiation skills.
• Participation
in 9th Regional Conference on Women & NGO
Forum, Regional (2004)
UNIFEM supported the participation of five Caribbean delegates:
one each from CAFRA and DAWN Caribbean; and one each from
the National Women’s Machineries of Dominica, Haiti
and St. Vincent. The participants were able to assist governmental
delegations to ensure that the Outcome Document of the Conference
reflected the concerns of Caribbean women. As a result, issues
such as HIV/AIDS were addressed as were concerns for the
connection between women’s familial responsibilities
and poverty.
