Since its creation in 1976 as an innovative
and catalytic fund, UNIFEM has supported numerous projects
and initiatives throughout the developing world that promote
the political, economic, and social empowerment of women.
These have ranged from small grassroots enterprises that improved
working conditions for women to public education campaigns
and the design of new gender-sensitive laws and marketing
systems.
UNIFEM is represented at the regional
level by 13 country offices. The offices develop and oversee
UNIFEM projects in their regions and identify trends and issues affecting
women in the region as a basis for new programming directions.
After a short period (1987-88) of functioning
through a Programme Officer at UNDP Barbados, the UNIFEM
Caribbean
Office began operations in 1992 from its Barbados location.
The Caribbean Office covers programming in 26 countries
including: The CARICOM member states
(Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica,
Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia,
St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad &
Tobago), the British Overseas Territories ( Anguilla, Bermuda,
British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, Turks
& Caicos Islands), the Netherlands Antilles (Bonaire,
Curacao, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten) and Aruba.
