DESafios: Rights-based Approach for Women’s Economic & Social Justice

Objective: To promote women’s involvement in local, national and regional accountability processes through monitoring of national and international government commitments and of adequate and sufficient resource allocations for their accomplishment; to promote and increase women’s participation and influence in political and economic decisions at local, national, regional and global levels towards the full exercise of their political, economic and social rights; to support the efforts of women’s organisations and other actors in civil society towards the enforcement of women’s economic and social rights and to develop regional and national advocacy strategies for effecting changes to existing laws and policies to ensure better protection of women’s rights.

Main elements:

• Discussions with ECLAC re collaboration on gender indicators with a view to supporting the training of statistical personnel in gender analysis and planning.

• Organise working group discussion on “The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Gender Equality”, as part of the UNDP Caribbean Regional MDG Conference, Barbados, to provide a space for women’s organisations to bring their concerns about gender and the MDGs to the table.

• Preliminary discussions with the UN County Team for Barbados/OECS re engendering reports on implementation of the MDGs and the Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers of selected OECS countries.

• Collaboration with ECLAC and FAO in convening a Regional Workshop on Gender and Agricultural Policies in the Caribbean to strengthen the understanding and commitment to gender analysis and planning in the agricultural sector. The workshop was attended by representatives from agricultural planning departments and gender bureaux.
